Spring Cleaning for Your Body: Eating Seasonably & Sensibly

{My dress closet is always in major disarray!}

Out with the old, in with the new

Usually during this time of year, I've got my Spring cleaning routine set:
  1. I go through my closets & give away a few items I haven't worn in the past two years
  2. Store my winter clothing
  3. Insert my S/S 2013 wardrobe into my closet
Simple,  and a sense of accomplishment, checking off that list, right?

Well, I decided this year that I'm not going to shed the old and make way for the new with just my closet space: I'm going add on some Spring cleaning for my body as well.  If I spend even half of the time on bettering myself as I do on arranging my clothes and accessories, think what a difference that could make!  For example,

40 min. of sorting old S/S clothing = 20 min. of yoga.

60 min. of ironing and hanging the wearable S/S clothing = half an hour catching up on a book or maybe making a Springtime healthy & delicious lunch.

Making time to maintain yourself and your healthy lifestyle - I think that's some pretty necessary Spring cleaning, don't you?  And don't forget: a new season comes with new fruits & veggies to eat.  Check out what's in season right now so you can eat seasonably AND sensibly!

Accessories Addiction

I'm taking a break from wedding planning to make and admission of guilt:

Hi, my name is Anna and I'm an accessories addict.

It's true; I can't pass up a sparkly ring, stackable bracelets, textured belts, multi-chain necklaces, pendants, and especially scarves.  I love both my cheap, costume jewelry and my investment pieces.  No one does investment pieces like Chanel, and I like to buy those vintage.  Most of my favorite pieces are from DVF, though, like this gorgeous textured belt or her colorful and feminine scarves.  I appreciate her color combinations and ability to go just far enough without going over the edge.  Plus, her site looks a lot like my photo inspiration journals, so I'd like to think DVF could be my BFF.  She's an inspiration as a designer and as a woman.

Check out the DVF blog HERE!

When I'm not drooling over my favorite accessories label, I'm a pretty frugal fashionista.  I don't think that you have to spend a lot of money to look great.  In fact, I know you don't!  I'm in love with some of my recent purchases and I won't even say how much they cost (hint: altogether, they add up to about 1/4 of my favorite DVF scarf).  Check out my recent haul and just imagine that each item cost a small fortune.

Ciao,

Flora and Philanthropy

Flora and Philanthropy:

How to use your wedding to link them

When I think of weddings I've been to this past year, I think of how pretty the bride looked and how joyous a celebration the event was.  I may remember the color of the bridesmaids' dresses or possibly the linens.  I might remember how sweet the cake smelled or how handsome the men looked dressed in their suits.  However, I couldn't tell you anything at all about the flowers.  The color, the type, the arrangement; my brain just doesn't remember those details.

Planning and budgeting my own wedding has made me realize two major things:

1) There are going to be flowers everywhere and man, they are not cheap!

and, more importantly,

2) I feel guilty about using so many beautiful flowers for such a short period of time.

So, keeping in mind that my fiance and I have been looking for opportunities to give back during both the planning stage and the actual wedding, I searched for ways to use our flowers toward our goal of being socially conscious and as 'green' as we can.  Luckily, the Washingtonian's "Bride & Groom" publication had an article on getting the most use out of your flowers and how to shrink your florist bill at the same time!  Here are some suggestions:
Buy local! (Gnome not included)

Choose flowers that you can buy locally from a neighborhood florist.  You'll be giving back to your local economy, plus saving money by using gorgeous flowers grown in your area!  Buying locally reduces your carbon footprint and increases your community spirit.  (Added bonus: using local flowers is a great way to show off the unique natural resources of your city or state to friends traveling from other parts of the country)
I love how each one is so different and gorgeous!

Try to only use flowers that are in season!  Chances are you can find at least a few different types that can tie in with your color scheme, and it gives you the opportunity to give your bouquets and arrangements character with the many textures and adornments that flourish during that season.  For example, check out that Fall bouquet.  It's so rich in color and texture and fits right in with the season!  The cost is lower when you buy in season, so you can choose to buy more flowers or use the extra cash to boost another area of your wedding.
Look at those poor, sad flowers wasting away on the floor

There are several ways you can reuse your event flowers.  The easiest is to use the bride's and bridesmaids' bouquets to help round out the decorations at the reception.  You could quickly put them in vases for the head table or use them to surround the cake or guestbook.  Another way to reuse your floral arrangements is to have them delivered after the reception to somewhere special to you, like a nearby hospital, nursing home or women's shelter.  An easy yet memorable way to brighten someone's day by not being wasteful!
A very green thumb planted these lovely stems!

Finally, you can plan ahead to use your garden and green thumb to plant what you'd like to use in your wedding.  This is something that I personally am terrible at (gardening is not one of my talents), but there are several family friends I may call on to see if they could plant a specific bed filled with flowers that I would be able to freshly cut the morning of the wedding.  How special would that be?  Less flowers will go to waste and, as a bonus, it decreases your cost!

Using one or all of these techniques can save you stress and money while still delivering the lovely wedding flowers you've dreamed of!  I'm sure years from now I may forget the names of the flowers at my wedding, but I'll never forget the way they framed the joyous occasion.   Going 'green' never looked so gorgeous!

Wedding Inspiration Board

Wedding Inspiration Board

Wedding Inspiration Board by asebourn featuring ball gowns

I am so in love with these Winter colors right now and how they can look modern by using clean lines and a chevron pattern.  The textures, especially on the necklace, dress and headband, are also a great way to play around with these cool colors.  I'm less inclined to make an inspiration board with warm colors because I despise Summer in the south, but we'll see.  I have a feeling I won't be able to resist!

Ciao, and stay warm!

A White Diamond Christmas

Christmas lights around the gate

This was the best Christmas I've had in my entire life.  That's a pretty bold statement, because twice I've gotten new cars Christmas morning from my sweet parents.  Christmas is always very special because of the incredible event that it marks - the birth of Christ.

Taffy, our cat, looking quite festive next to my watch

However, this Christmas, I received some pretty amazing gifts, particularly the jewelry.......................
my parents gave me a new beautiful Marc Jacobs watch! --------->

Okay, okay, yes the watch was gorgeous.  It's not what made this Dec. 25th the best Christmas I've had so far.  I'll let my story continue with photos:

My amazing boyfriend became my fiance!  A beautiful proposal on my front porch while it was snowing on Christmas afternoon led to me saying "Yes, of course!" and then crying many, many tears of joy!
David is excited and keeping it together.  I'm excited and crying like a baby, haha  Thank goodness for waterproof mascara!
A ring he designed especially for me, and it was made of conflict-free diamonds (something that's important to us both!).  He had some help from my sweet friends and family, too.  The result is the above: a gorgeous symbol of a promise to spend our lives together!

We just couldn't pass up the opportunity to celebrate in the snow!  We haven't had a white Christmas in a long time, so the weather made this day even more special.  The mistletoe didn't hurt either... :)

A very snowy candy cane heart.  It was really coming down at that point, and we were freezing!

This is my favorite shot of the night.  He said "I want to dip you" and I replied "umm..okay?" kind of nervously.  But in this moment, I completely forgot the camera and pretty much the rest of the world except for the two of us.  Looking at this photo now, I still get caught in that moment.

So, that's my Christmas story.  I started the day happy and thankful, and I ended it happy and thankful, but also blessed to be able to say that I'll get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend by my side.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and yours!

XOXO,
Anna

Pretty in Plaid

Usually I tell people (especially guys) to stay away from plaid because, well, eww.  However, a good plaid coat or jacket is a big fat YES during Fall and Winter.  Just looking at some of the plaids from the F/W 2012 collections makes me feel all warm and cozy, ready to sit and read by the fireplace or go on a casual date.  I even have plaid wellies that are indestructible and I consider the pair a part of my best fashion  investments.

So, raise your pumpkin or caramel apple spice latte to plaid, a major player in any great wardrobe!

My Mixtape

  I love a good mixtape. . .

Hello, there!
The first post is always the most difficult, isn't it?  I have to decide how exactly to introduce myself, this blog and its purpose.  Introducing myself, well I'll just leave that up to my blog.  What someone loves defines the person, or at least gives a roundabout definition.  To know what I love is to know me.  Now, on to what this blog is about: what I love.  I've always been an overly involved person.  I love watching, wearing, reading, listening to, and being with a myriad of things and persons.  It's a little bit of a problem, because loving so many things makes one exhausted at the end of the day.  I can't keep these loves to myself and they've always spilled into conversations with friends.
Life is a mixtape; this blog is playing my tracks.

After becoming sick, I've found it harder to go out and spread the news about a new designer, an exciting book or a great nonprofit that's getting started.  What good are your loves if you can't share them?  If you love something on here and you don't see a link to where you can find it, let me know and I'll try my hardest to help.  I give credit whenever I can to the the people who are or create the things I love and post here.

For those around in the mixtape 'era,' you can understand when I call this blog my own personal mixtape.  I'm recording it for my own benefit as much as anyone (if anyone) else.  The point is in the constant recording.

Ciao for now.
